Firewall Appliance (not software) – Every computer network should have a dedicated physical network firewall appliance. These devices are connected directly to the ISP Gateway and supply networking services for your entire computer network. One very important safety tip to remember, when you order Internet from a big provider and they say that a firewall is included, that firewall is to protect their system from nefarious things that come from your browsing and Internet activities.

Firewall Hardware offers the following features:

  • Intrusion Prevention – Out of the box, firewalls block all incoming traffic. This means that nothing outside of your office can access your local area network unless you have configured it to do so. (This requires the management and continual upgrading of security and firmware updates.)
  • Port Forwarding – Typically used when there are services or devices inside your network that you need to allow external access to. Examples would be the ability to watch security cameras at the office from your home. Or Remote Desktop Connections for your telecommuters.
  • Bandwidth Prioritization – These days, smartphones and other personal devices monopolize our client networks. Between system updates, App purchase, social media, and streaming, we have seen entire networks come to a screeching halt while smartphones sync employee data. Bandwidth Prioritization specifies which types of traffic get the most bandwidth and which should get minimal or no bandwidth.
  • VPN Access – Many newer Firewalls also have built-in VPN access. Your Telecommuters can now communicate with your office safely and securely.
  • Additional Features – Your Managed IT company will likely utilize your onsite firewall for monitoring and management of your entire network security. Your safety is their business. This is the first step in them keeping you safe.
