Recently we have had many customers and non-customer alike inquire as to “how does one estimate and plan for the proper bandwidth needs for live streaming, video conferencing and other high volume traffic for their business?”

Below are the Internet download speeds recommendations per stream for playing TV shows and movies through Netflix.

  • 5 Megabits per second – Required broadband connection speed
  • 5 Megabits per second – Recommended broadband connection speed
  • 0 Megabits per second – Recommended for SD quality
  • 0 Megabits per second – Recommended for HD quality
  • 25 Megabits per second – Recommended for Ultra HD quality

Now, keep in mind this is PER stream.  If conducting multiple streams and teleconference situations at the same time;  you will need to take that into consideration when choosing your Broadband bandwidth planning requirements.

Also, keep in mind this is a one way communication (download). When teleconferencing, you are creating a two way communication need which is download AND upload. Your teleconference stream will sync up using the highest speed possible for both your download and upload.

One more thing, you want to put as few devices on WiFi as possible when streaming or teleconferencing. Wired connectivity is constant and stable, WiFi even in the best signal situation can drop which is not good. Anticipate wiring all devices that do not need to be mobile. Even laptops when sitting at employee desks should be hardwired and then unplugged along with the power cord when going mobile. It’s just better overall and more optimized for today’s Internet needs.
